Enter to win a $1000 Gift Certificate from Tom Lee Music

Sounds like you just sign up for their enewsletter in their store or online and you are eligible to win. Note the draw date is October 10, 2008 so get your submissions in!

Thinking back to almost 20 years back, I remember one of my biggest childhood dilemnas. Play recorder or commit to the band. I knew playing the recorder would result in a semi-humiliating assembly after 3 months of squeeking out "Go Tell Aunt Rudy", but I'd be home free after that. How could I, at a mere 8 years old, commit myself to three entire months to anything? Recorder students never had to practice again after that short period. Freedom would be mine. Still, the Friendly Giant could rock it, so it had potential...

My aunt, who was living with us at the time, was really big into Zamfir (watch the video, but don't laugh :P, Zamfir is awesome! haha!) so in the end, there wasn't much of a choice. I saw the versatility of a "real" instrument, such as the Pan flute, so I decided to go with the flute. And I never looked back. If only I had the skills of this guy here.... Greg Padillo is amazing! We've come along way from Zamfir haven't we?

Vancouver International Film Festival to hit Granville September 25th.

Vancouver International Film Festival - same planet different worlds - runs Sept. 25 thru Oct 10. Here are the descriptions of a few feature shows.

Cry me a River
Jia Zhangke's most daring combination of documentary and fiction yet. The old socialist Factory 420 in Chengdu, Sichuan, is being replaced by ultra-capitalist luxury residences. Interviews with former workers recreate an entire lost world; appearances by famous actors (including Joan Chen) lace realism with poetry.

3 Women
Three generations of Iranian women--a recalcitrant daughter chafing at the boundaries of contemporary middle-class society, her mother who came of age during the Islamic revolution, and her grandmother, steeped in traditional ways--serve as the focus of Manijeh Hekmat's powerful realist drama.

Addicted to Plastic!
Ian Connacher's doc is a thorough--and thoroughly worrying--look at the presence of plastic in our world. Alarming and enlightening in equal measure, the film hops from factories and landfills to India and the Pacific Ocean and back in search of facts, figures and, most importantly, solutions.

Adhen
A French pallet factory is the setting for this lively, humour-filled exploration of religious hypocrisy and the immigrant experience. Mao (played by the film's director Rabah Ameur-Zaimeche) builds a mosque for his Algerian employees and chooses the imam without consultation. When the factory threatens to close, the workers must choose whether to fight for their jobs

Adoration
Atom Egoyan returns with this winner of the Ecumenical Prize at Cannes 2008. Devon Bostick stars as a troubled teen who spreads a false rumour via the internet, only to unleash a firestorm. Egoyan's trademark shifts in time and thoughtful analysis of issues of identity inform this cautionary tale about technology's tendency to dehumanize.

After School
Uchida Kenji’s hit thriller has as many twists as The Usual Suspects but stays rooted in its likeable, fallible characters. A common-or-garden salaryman has gone missing, maybe with a woman, but as assorted yakuza, private eyes and schoolteachers discover, more is going on than meets the eye. With hot new stars Oizumi Yo and Sasaki Kuranosuke

Be a Fluevog Designer

Do you love John Fluevog shoes? Read on to learn how to have your design included with the Fluevog line at Open Source Footwear by Fluevog.

In his never-ending quest to give Fluevogers a voice, John unveils the latest CHOSEN design from the pre-2.0, pre-wiki Open Source Footwear Program. San Francisco-based artist Samantha Zaza submitted her wonderful design in June 2007 from her original sketch on the back of a convenient appliance manual. When John saw Samantha's submission, he pictured it fitting in perfectly with the rest of the new Fall members of the classic Mini Family. And after a little back and forth we are thrilled to present The Zaza - designed with Real Fluevogers!

If you've got a shoe stuck in your head that you'd like to see removed, and turned into a real pair of Fluevogs for the whole world, submit a drawing at Open Source Footwear. For inspiration, feel free to browse through the hundreds of Fluevoger-submitted designs, and then get started. Your ideas could become actual shoes!

YELLE - You enjoy life

YELLE
October 28
Commodore Ballroom

Yelle (a feminised acronym of YEL, "You enjoy life") is a French singer from the town of Saint-Brieuc, Bretagne. She rose to fame on MySpace when she posted a song titled "Short Dick Cuizi", dissing Cuizinier, a member of the Parisian hip-hop group TTC. With producer and close friend GrandMarnier, Yelle has recorded a debut album Pop-Up, after her hit single "Je Veux Te Voir" (a finalized version of "Short Dick Cuizi"). The song, which samples the bassline from 20 Fingers' 1994 club hit Short Dick Man, received heavy airplay on MTV. She was also featured on Fatal Bazooka's song "Parle à ma main" in 2007. As of October 2007, she is opening for Mika during his European tour. In February 2008 she performed the track "À cause des Garçons" on the BBC Three show "Lily Allen and Friends". The show claimed that this was her first appearance on UK television. She was MTV's 'Artist of the Week' for the week of March 24-30, 2008, appearing during commercials

MISSION OF BURMA on Sept 30

MISSION OF BURMA
September 30
The Plaza Club
881 Granville Street

Mission of Burma is an American post-punk band formed in Boston, Massachusetts in 1979. The band was formed by Roger Miller (guitar), Clint Conley (bass), Peter Prescott (drums) and Martin Swope (tape manipulator/sound engineer). Miller, Conley and Prescott share singing and songwriting duties. Like many of their post-punk contemporaries, Mission of Burma's efforts are largely concerned with extending punk's original vocabulary without losing its essential rebellious spirit. Using rapid shifts in dynamics, unconventional time signatures and chord progressions along with tape effects, Mission of Burma challenges the prevailing idioms of punk while attempting to retain its power and immediacy.

Selling over a million copies and earning platinum certification, Chariot yielded three hit singles – “I Don’t Want To Be,” “Follow Through,” and the title-track, “Chariot.” But it wasn’t just the numbers that confirmed DeGraw’s popularity. The song, “I Don’t Want To Be,” was chosen as the theme song for the hit TV show, “One Tree Hill.” DeGraw made numerous appearances on television shows like The Late Show with David Letterman, The Tonight Show with Jay Leno, Live with Regis & Kelly, Last Call with Carson Daly, and others. His songs have often been sung on “American Idol.” DeGraw has toured tirelessly, selling out to bigger and bigger audiences every time around.

MARIACHI: MEXICAN TRADITION

MARIACHI: MEXICAN TRADITION
September 16 at 8:00 pm – ORPHEUM

Mexifiesta Productions presents this exuberant musical evening headlined by the world’s best musicians playing the unique passionate music of the Mariachi, featuring over 30 musicians including Mariachi Vargas de Tecalitlan (top Mexican group in the world) Mariachi del Sol (Canada’s best Mexican Group) with Folkloric Dancers from Grupo America, Tierra del Sol & Mexico Vivo.

Interesting fact: Gaspar Vargas (father of Silvestre) started Mariachi Vargas in 1897. You read that right -- 1897. This band basically invented modern mariachi, and they're still playing today. The group formed in a small Mexican town called Tecalitlan (south of Jalisco), and they spent their formative years defining their sound and experimenting with different instrumental lineups. Silvestre Vargas took over in the 1930s, bringing a level of professionalism (and sobriety!) that made them oddities in their field -- and ultimately helped them cement their status as a premier mariachi band. They played behind all the great singers, including Jose Alfredo Jimenez, and continue to drive the form forward today under ever-evolving leadership. Wow!

Alanis Morissette at the Orpheum

ALANIS MORRISETTE
November 4 at 7:30 pm – ORPHEUM

Live Nation presents seven-time Grammy winner Alanis Morrisette in support of her critically-acclaimed album Flavors of Entanglement, live in concert with special guests.

Tickets 604-280-3311 Ticketmaster Live Nation

Did you know Alanis Morissette has the BEST sense of humor? Dont' get me wrong, I like Fergie (ok I only tolerate her as a solo artist. It frustrates me that a woman with such an amazing set of pipes raps instead of sings! And there's also that small issue of taking Josh Duhamel off the market!) and the Black Eyed Peas were just the best thing to happen to mainstream music for a good chunk of the early 2000s. They didn't seem to take themselves too seriously, their music was infectious, and best of all, they looked like they were having a great time. A part of me mourns the Black Eye Peas, but we've stil got Alanis.... Check these videos of her flaming the pretentiousness of the BEP vid. Hilarious.

Alicia Keys at the Orpheum

Grammy Award winner, Alicia Keys will be performing at the Orpheum Theatre on September 21 and 22. I can't even begin to express what a treat you are in for if you managed to score tickets. Sales at Scarlet

Calling all busty ladies. Scarlet Lingerie & Indulgence on 460 Granville is having a sale on selected D and E cup bras. A good selection to choose from but its a clearance situation so going soon is better than later.

Overall, there's more sales than not, the store has also previously adjusted prices to reflect the strength of the canadian dollar resulting in even more sales on brands such as Elle Mcpherson and Betsey Johnson. La Perla intimates were on sale including this cute demi bra.

60-80% of women wear the wrong size bra and a bra size will change six to eight times in your lifetime. If you suspect you might not be in the right over the shoulder boulder holder, do your "girls" a favor and let the Scarlet staff help you find something a little more comfortable. They can measure and assist with finding a fit.

New Fall Line at Urban Outfitters - under $50!

Preview the new Fall Favs you can find at Urban Outfitters. All items are under $50. Bargoon.

What totally kills me is the strange stuff you find there. For example, you can get your very own Hamburger phone a la Juno. Just as fans of Napoleon Dynamite donned Vote For Pedro T-shirts in 2005, hamburger phones, which are shaped like fast food's most venerable Mcstaple, have become the hippest way to pay tribute to Juno, the indie sensation starring Halifax actress Ellen Page and directed by Montreal's Jason Reitman.

The hamburger phone earned a cameo in Juno because of screenwriter Diablo Cody's girlhood affection for the retro handset, which is also mentioned in her 2005 autobiography Candy Girl. In the film, the title character uses her bedroom "hamburger phone" - which technically looks more like a cheeseburger - on a number of occasions, complaining in a pivotal scene that it's "really awkward to talk on."

Do you covet? It can be yours.
