Taiwan, an island which has embraced influences from the world for the past 400 years, Taiwanese cuisines are the tasty way to understanding the culture. Hakka, aboriginal and local derivatives of Chinese cuisines such as the famous beef noodle soup, often can be seen alongside Taiwanese dishes as the local specialties. Due to the influences of the Buddhism, Vegetarian dishes are also among world’s best with its innovative uses of spices that makes the dish simple yet packs with flavors.

Echoing the theme “crossover,” the chefs this year are challenged to prepare signature Taiwanese dishes using local ingredients from Canada. Using the recipes these chefs provided, audience will be able to recreate dishes that are uniquely Taiwan just by going to the supermarket in their own neighborhood.

Why did Monkey King in the Journey to the West raid the Crystal Palace? Winning awards at puppetry festivals in New York and France, I-Wan-Jan will bring “Raiding the Crystal Palace” and “A Chance Encounter” to Toronto for the first time.

Founded by the world renowned Master Puppeteer, Tien-Lu Lee, “I-Wan-Jan,” literally means "vivid mimicry," to show that in his skillful hands these wooden puppets came alive as if they were real persons. Besides his dedication to passing on the performing art of glove puppetry, Lee is known for his innovative approach with the incorporation of martial art sequences and acrobatic stunts into the scenes acted out by his puppets, Lee’s lively choreographies resulted in tightly knit, action-packed stories filled with thrilling fight scenes.

With the puppets, twirling, jumping and somersaulting from hand to hand in front of creatively designed props, the story of Monkey King brings a whole new way of story telling for kids and parents to enjoy this summer.

From the warm and balmy Southern Taiwan (Kaohsiung County), the Wufu Elementary School students will finally bring the traditional Taiwanese folk art to the stage of TELUS TAIWANfest. Suffered from the disaster caused by typhoon Morakot, the school was forced to cancel the performance last year. This year, the award winning Diabolo team will introduce the regional folk songs around Taiwan while playing Diabolo. This juggling prop evolved from Chinese yo-yo is a Taiwanese traditional children’s folk game. The school will also play hand puppets to children's songs around the world.

Wufu has developed a well-rounded curriculum that includes multi-disciplinary arts and provides students with variety of learning. Wufu incorporates local traditional arts into classes including orchestra, Taiwanese talk show, Taiwanese lanterns, Taiwanese puppet shows and diabolo and also sports such as table tennis and football. The school also values the importance of cultural exchange on the education of children.
