Three Free Afternoons of Vertical Dance Performances

Serendipity

Open Rehearsals: August 30th & 31st - 1:30 to 3:30 pm
Performances: September 1st - 12 pm, 1 pm & 2 pm
Vancouver Block Building, 736 Granville Street  (at the City Centre Station of the Canada Line)
FREE

(This is not a picture of Granville, clearly, but since it hasn't happened yet I grabbed a photo of their performance at the Kinnear Centre for Creativity and Innovation.)
Next week, for the first time, Aeriosa performers will dance on the Vancouver Block, a designated heritage building near the intersection of Granville and West Georgia.  Built in 1912, this art nouveau high-rise is easily identified by its crowning architecture - a four-sided clock tower illuminated in neon lights at night.  On Monday and Tuesday (August 30th and 31st) Julia Taffe will be creating new choreography for six dancers suspended from ropes on the north, west and south walls of the building.  On Wednesday September 1st at 12 pm, 1 pm and 2 pm the company will present three short performances of Serendipity.  All are welcome to this free event.  Just one more reason to "Rediscover Granville" and stroll down the middle of the street before the buses return to their regular routes and pedestrians are relegated to the sidewalks on September 7th!

Cops for Cancer: A Just Cause

Come August 21st Cops for Cancer will be on the 800th block of Granville Street with the dedicated, vigilant staff of law enforcement and emergency to raise more dollars to this great foundation. These hard working folks have shown empathy and even more in this heartfelt story. To think that this started with one child’s dilemma with kids teasing him about being bald from chemo-therapy and a couple of officers shaving their heads to prove being bald is cool to sprout into something so big. This movement of Cops for Cancer started in 1994 and managed to raise 32.8 million dollars. Now the time has come for Vancouver to shine against cancer. Head over for activities such as public head shavings for charity to meeting officers.

22nd Queer Film Festival

The Queer Film Festival is in its final days for the year. The films for the film festival will be shown all over Vancouver including Empire Granville 7 Cinemas. Films are not the only ingredient to this festival but workshops, discussions, parties and much more. Tickets can be purchased online at queerfilmfestival.ca.

Just read about an interesting film called “Fish Child” that will have its final showing at the festival on the 21st. The movie is placed in South America looking at the daughter of an influential well off family falling in love with the poor maid that lives with them. The focus however is on the power struggle and the endeavors they will go through in order to be free of all the problems.

John Lee + 168

Picture from The Vancouver Sun

John Lee of Langley has built himself a fortification that will now meet the streets of Granville on August 10th. This wall is nothing of the usual and all of the interesting. Made completely of speakers and wood it stands at 9 feet tall and 40 feet wide. 168 speakers channeling 2,000 watts of power this “Wailing Wall of Sound” is serious business. Although volume will not be pushed to the max the sheer spectacle will provide powerful music and a rumble from the bass like 168 speakers were doing it… To think this all started with a speaker deal where the more John Lee bought the cheaper they got.

Tom Lee presents Robert Godin and great deals

Robert Godin will be at Tom Lee Music on 929 Granville Street. Admission to this event is FREE. He’s going to let you know what you want to look for in your next guitar, the low down on new Godin designed guitars and of course you’ll get to see this guitar engineer live. The objective of Godin's 20 years as a manufacturer has been to combine the age old techniques of guitar building with new technology and technique. Whether it is electronics with relevance, research on acoustics based on shape, wood or density there is an attempt to apply.

Also, Tom Lee Music is offering 6 months 0% financing on Gibson Epiphone guitars till August 31st. This is your chance to get that guitar now that you can’t quite fit into your budget for a couple pay checks. This offer is only at the Vancouver location and online.
