The Fox Rocks Granville Street Concert Series

Today July 23rd will host The Granville Street Concert on Granville x Georgia featuring BC talent starting at 7pm featuring a band every hour. Hosted by Fox 99.3FM in cooperation with the Downtown Vancouver Business Improvement Association, Granville Entertaintment, V.P.D. and City of Vancouver.

Venice Queen: This band has influences from many great bands like Red Hot Chili Peppers, Stone Temple, Queens of the Stone Age and Alice in Chains. They also hold the title as Fox Vancouver Seed Winners of 09. This 4-piece band denies to pin themselves to one style so their music is eclectic and very well composed. Homegrown from Richmond and bound with great music style.

Goodbye Beatdown: Drop down a rapper gone vocalist, sprinkle in a DJ who spins rock, reggae and hip hop with a tea spoon of bass keyboarding with a jazz background, a rockin drummer with lightning hands, and a guitarist who has played jazz to heavy metal. Don’t forget to influence that all with famous band Red Hot Chili Peppers. What you are left with is a very interesting sound called “Goodbye Beatdown” that fits the need of the iPod generation. Goodbye Beatdown are also title holders of “Fox Vancouver Seed Winners 09” Vancouver born 5-piece band.

Veer Union: This band held a top 10 rock slot. Not only that they held it for the longest amount of time for any new artist in the industry. Songs are already being used from this band in example the new theme for the 2009 Stanley Cup champions Pittsburg Penguins, WWE for its heavy pummeling song “Seasons”. With its album “Against the Grain” this band has shown its talent, potential and vigor. Vancouver being the birthplace of this band come out and support!

Future dates for more concerts include August 27th and September 10th

Dancing in the Streets a Success!

Last Sunday Jungle Swing hosted the first in a series of Sunday Afternoon Summer dance events called Dancing in the Streets. About 200 Lindyhoppers and spectators enjoyed the DJed Big Band music under the clear Vancouver Summer skies while a soft breeze blew north on the block.

Dancers raved about the opportunity to dance in a new venue, and spectators gushed about the vibrancy the dancing and music brought to the street. More than a dozen hand held cameras could be seen filming at any time, so look to youtube for videos to pop up!

Here is a video of Lindy Flashmob that happened earlier in the year at the same location.

This week the Dancing series will be hosted by Salsavancouver.net newlywed super salsa team Stephen and Jennifer Dancey.

Veterans, Stephen and Jennifer have many years under their belt as producers of community dance events having hosted the wildly popular Sunday Afternoon Salsa at Robson Square, which has been on hiatus this year due to construction.

Reminder that this Sunday, a 30 min class will begin at 2:00 with social dancing from 2:30-6pm. Bring water and a towel!

Friday, July 23, 2010 630pm

Jabu Bags, a socially-conscious business created in Vancouver and based in Swaziland, is holding an improv show and benefit concert to raise funds to build a much needed workshop and community centre.

"Singin' For Swaziland" will be a benefit concert and improv show on Friday, July 23, 2010, 630pm at The Cellar Nightclub in Vancouver, BC. Tickets for the July 23 event at The Cellar Nightclub will be available for purchase at the door or in advance by emailing info@jabubags.com.

About JabuBags

Started by Vancouverite Megan Yarema, Jabu Bags was created for the purpose of helping rural women in Swaziland find meaningful employment. Since its inception almost three years ago, the 16 women involved have been making cloth bags from African textiles, and take pride in attaining steady part time income. Moving towards fair trade status, the women need a proper working environment and room to grow, while the community will benefit from a beautiful space dedicated to their efforts. Working in partnership with the RAW Foundation, a Dutch organization that builds for underprivileged communities using low-carbon and recycled materials, a beautiful centre has been designed for these women.

What you missed this weekend on Granville

As posted early last week, Granville was a hub of activity this weekend as the City hosted on fun free stuff on it’s green turf recycled from the resurfacing of Andy Livingston Park

Demo from the All star Jump Rope Team.

A visit from the Canadian Olympic Badminton Team

And the Langley Ukulele ensemble

If you missed them, Watch this video.

The Grass is Greener, downtown.

If you were wondering what’s up with the strange green turf down the 700 block of Granville by Sears and in patches throughout you wouldn’t be the only one.

With the buses not returning to the street until Sept 6, 2010, the City of Vancouver and the Downtown Vancouver BIA have decided to take advantage of this vehicle-free time to trial some new ideas.

Business, busking and summer - a mix worth celebrating on Granville!

Starting June 25 and running every Friday night from 5-7pm, buskers hired by the DVBIA will be getting the weekend party started by playing on the 600, 700 and 800 blocks. Also watch for three buskers concerts on the 700 block throughout the summer.

Working with the busking community and the City of Vancouver, busking will shine on Granville while many of the streets are closed until Labour Day. Playing hours have been extended to midnight every night and limited amplification is now formally allowed. We've also designed 27 'busk stops' along the street: locations best suited to reducing noise for residents, not blocking access to businesses and high pedestrian traffic. Signs indicating the stops are posted on the light poles and 'pitch sizes' or act sizes are designated on the signs.
